HISTORY
La Citadelle Catholic Secondary School is the result of a long struggle for the right to French-language education in Cornwall. In the 1960s, Francophone students attended Γcole Saint-Laurent, where French instruction was very limited. In 1969, the community began calling for the creation of an independent French-language high school but faced many refusals.
After years of waiting, Francophone students launched a strike on March 14, 1973. This historic movement, supported by the community, led to the release of the Symons Report, which recommended the creation of a separate school. On June 12, 1973, Γcole La Citadelle was officially founded.
Since that day, La Citadelle has stood as a symbol of pride and perseverance for the Franco-Ontarian community. The school welcomes students from Grade 7 to Grade 12 and continues to offer a rich educational environment grounded in Catholic and Francophone values.
Even today, the school community continues the fight for a better future. Despite the urgent need for a new, modern school building, the project submitted by the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de lβEst ontarien (CSDCEO) was not approved by the Ministry of Education. We therefore continue to advocate for fair and adequate facilities that provide students with a learning environment worthy of their potential.
